Every day we speak to hundreds of people who can’t get a job because of their past criminal records.
Here is a letter from a person we recently helped to get a Canada Pardon explaining how she felt having a criminal record while looking for a job:
“For all those people who are going through what I went through was not easy”
“I was always embarassed to find a job. I was afraid that if I went to an interview the words “do you have a criminal record?” would pop up in my head. So, I gave up, put myself down, didn’t bother trying to find a job.”
“Fighting with my family everyday, them telling me to try at least not to be afraid to get a job, but I was so scared that they would look down on me.”
“I know what I did was wrong, but it wasn’t the biggest criminal offence, but I still felt low. I didn’t want to talk to anyone because I thought that they knew, even though they didn’t.”
“I always made up excuses to my friends when they wanted to travel. I missed out so much because of what I had done.”
“When I received your letter that I got my Pardon and my criminal records were destroyed, I was so pleased that I danced around my apartment.”
