Having a criminal record while applying for work can be a nightmare.
Most employers are requiring criminal background checks as part of their hiring process. Regardless of how old your criminal record is, an employer can see it and its unlikely you will get the job considering there are other candidates who do not have a criminal record.
People are surprised that even if their criminal charge has been dismissed, withdrawn, conditional or absolute discharge, it is still showing up on a criminal background check.
Here is a letter we received from a person we helped to get a Pardon for a DUI:
“I would like to thank Pardons Canada for all of its help in getting my criminal record removed. A criminal record is something that stains your personal status as a Canadian and wherever you go.”
“I was working for an automotive company, but unfortunately, the company closed down in March of ’09. I was worried that the criminal record I had would prevent me from finding another job.”
“What I did instead was I enrolled in full-time school again to specialize in the field that I was working in. I did this firstly because it was something that I had been wanting to do for a while and secondly just in case the pardon did not come through. I was afraid to apply to any other large company because of the infamous “background check”. Infamous for those who have a criminal record is what it is.”
“Now with my criminal record gone in July of ’09, I don’t regret enrolling in full-time school. I still feel it was the right choice to make, but the peace of mind is priceless.”
” I can now apply to any other large company in Canada right after I finish school, and I can even travel to the U.S. if I really want. I have an uncle there I want to visit.”
