Visitor: I had a police record check done just recently. I had no idea what to expect. I’m 65 and looking for volunteer work. I was asked by the Canadian red cross to get a police record check. I was asked again about this when I installed an app in my phone called insta-cart where you go grocery shopping for other people. I did not proceed with that app, but I did go ahead with the red cross.
I submitted my result to the red cross, and now I am waiting to see if I can be approved in spite of my record. They had said that if a record exists, they need to know the nature of it, so I’m hoping. But it’s a rather serious offence that showed up.
So there are two items that appear. I believe I was finger printed twice in my life. Possibly more as a youth. The first item was prior to my 18th birthday, so I don’t know why that shows up. I suspect that I went to court and was sentenced after my 18th birthday. I can tell you more about that if necessary. It was break and enter. 2 years probation. April/1975 in Cornwall, Ontario. I was born June 2nd, 1957.
The second item, I’m quite concerned about: Assault Peace officer in 1981 in Medicine, Hat Alberta. I had called police to my residence for assistance with a problem. When the police man arrived, he said he could not help with this problem. There was nothing he could do. So I became upset, but I said thank you. And then I slammed the door. His foot was in the door. The door also struck his shoulder. I attended court the following morning. I paid a $300 fine.
I’ve been a career person. I’ve had a passport for years. I come and go into the U.S. no problem, but I was detained a few times before I obtained a passport. I’ve never had so much trouble getting a job, as I’m having for this volunteer position.
Pardons Canada: Most employers and volunteer organizations do criminal checks and even though your assault and break and enter are old, they still show up on the criminal record check. Once your pardon is granted then nothing will show up and you won’t have any issues getting volunteer work or employment.
