The Federal government has announced today that they will be raising the fees to approve Pardons from $50 to $150. This is necessary in order to continue to run the Pardon program in Canada.
The good news is that the government remains committed to the pardon program. This is very important because it gives Canadians a second chance after they have been punished for past criminal activities. Nowadays most employers in the country are running criminal background checks before hiring a new employee or if a current employee is being promoted internally. Often an old criminal record, no matter how small can get in the way of getting a job. Once a Pardon is granted, the old criminal record will no longer be available for public record.
These changes are coming in the wake of proposed changes to the Pardons Legislation highlighted in Bill-C23.
