Visitor: I worked 25 years at Sheraton on the falls and worked my way up to supervisor. 3 years ago I had to stop working to assist my husband. He passed away 6 months ago and I’m trying to adjust with pensions.
I’ve put in applications to the point of actually getting interviews at the age of 66 . Remembering this problem I realize I can’t get a police clearance as part of my employment application as my old theft offence will show up. I never turned my mind to this because I was simply young and dumb and completely forgot about this old theft charge.
When I went to work we weren’t required to have a police clearance. I guess over the years things have changed with good reason. I’m at a stand still because my funds are limited trying to get the estate in order.
My alternative probably is to wait until estate is completed. It’s been a very bumpy road this past 5 months. Trying to pick up my pieces and find myself after 40 years of being with my husband is very difficult. Thank you for your time.
Pardons Canada: Even though your theft offence is over 25 years old, it still appears in a criminal check and yes it will get in the way of employment. Fortunately, once your pardon or record suspension is granted, the criminal record for theft will be removed and you will be safe to get whatever work you wish without the worry of a criminal record getting in the way.
