There are many reasons why having a criminal record can hold you back in your life but the biggest obstacle is usually employment. In Canada, most employers conduct criminal background checks and if they see that you have a criminal record they will likely not hire you as there are many other candidates applying for the same position that do not have a criminal record.
The good news is that once the criminal record is removed by way of a pardon or record suspension, you will be safe for all employment as the criminal record will no longer show up on a criminal background check.
